Only Pixels?

Almost inevitably when a person complains about loosing a Meeroo, or having issues with them, some other individual will make a comment along the lines of: "They are only pixels." There are a few variations on the wording but the concept is the same and I am not entirely sure what it is intended to mean. I might just as well say: "The Mona Lisa is only paint" or "That dog is only cells." Both are accurate, but they do not convey the entirety of the object being observed. A lot more goes into Meeroos than what you see on your screen.
One explanation of what the phrase might really mean is: "They are not real." That leads us to examine what being real is. In no way are they the same as a live animal, but they do exist. Perhaps it is because, technically, they can be turned off. A light bulb can be turned on and off, but that does not make light less real. One significant difference that must be noted is that real life animals can feel pain, they can be unhappy and uncomfortable. You can buy yourself a whole litter of Meeroos for your Birthday and if in six (6) months you do not like them any more you can just delete them, or give them away. Nobody is hurt because, while they are incredible, Meeroos can not really feel. So part of what could be meant is that becoming attached to your Meeroos is one-sided. You can love your Meeroos all you want but they are, in fact; scripted. We all accept that Meeroos are simulacrum, that they mimic life. It is part of becoming immersed in Second Life, that slight suspension of disbelief that makes it possible to accept Second Life as it is. There is really no issue there, it is understood that the attachment is simulated by the Meeroos, that does not diminish the attachment their owners hold for them. Nobody, I hope, is saying that any digital pet is equivalent to a real animal. If you have to choose betwixt Meeroo food and dog food, please please, for Vashara's sake, feed the dog.

Some people have more cause to become attached, almost reliant on their Meeroos. As inevitable as the first comment disparaging the form Meeroos are presented in is the eventual reply from another player, housebound with a dying relative, confined to a bed for months at a time, permanently disabled, agoraphobic, and so on. There are so many people out there using Second Life in general and Meeroos in specific to bring some joy into their lives, to keep them company or to keep them busy when there may be nothing else there to fill that void. Would they find some other outlet if Meeroos did not exist? Many would, some perhaps not, but what matters is that they do exist and they have and or are performing that roll. When something is that important to you, maybe even keeping you sane, you can be excused for becoming slightly attached. For every corporate style mega breeder in it for the money there is another player for whom Meeroos are a lifeline.

Meeroos are pixels, that can not be denied, but they are far more than pixels. A complex web of data, scripts, prims, textures and they are real, despite the fact that you can not hold one. There are many real things that cannot be held. Meeroos should perhaps be likened to great works of art, or architecture. They are a creation of humans, and some very real people put in an awful lot of time and effort to get them to where they are now. They are not alive, just adorable.

Finally there is another interpretation of the pixels phrase that occurs to me, that what they are really saying is "You should not care so much" to which I reply: I will care as much as I like thank you, but I hope that is not the case. The recent spate of Nest giving philanthropists in Group Chat leads me to believe the vast majority of Meeroos folks have their hearts in the right place.

Long Cycle vs. Short Cycle Breeding

Recently I had a conversation during which the other person, somewhat tactfully, implied that I do not have many rare Meeroos. They are not entirely wrong, I have a few Amber coats and a few very short tails. That is the result of my endeavours so far. I do not think I have done poorly, I do not keep a massive number of Meeroos. I do think I can do better. I have come to the understanding that the Regard boost is minute, at least I believe it to be. Perhaps significant from time to time, providing a surprise. But for the most part it is the nudge Tiger describes.

My breeding method up until now has included something I will call long cycle breeding, my words for the concept of breeding a large percentage of my Meeroos for their entire breeding cycle of sixty (60) days. I thought the additional Regard gained by the Meeroos during their lives would eventually provide some better traits. In some cases this may even have worked, it is hard to say. I have gotten some cool traits and the parental Regard may have played a part.

My new method I am calling short cycle breeding. It it based on the principle that genetics play the dominant role in breeding and almost discounting the Regard boost. My plan is to breed each set of Meeroos a few times, no more than (3) and if they do not produce the Nests I want I will switch their partners. Again I will let them breed no more than three (3) times before making a final decision on keeping them until they elderize or setting them free.

I can only guess what, if any, effect my new strategy will have on my breeding program. I am not sure how to measure it exactly, but I will keep you posted if I notice anything different. If I get any results or have any failures. I hope my accelerated Coaxing will use up a few of the exciting Nests I have around I really want to Coax. I had forgotten how many offspring Nests I have stashed away.

I am not eschewing Regard totally, I still intend to use the hilarious Pet-O-Matic to bring my new generations up to over one thousand (1,000) Regard points quickly. I do think that helps quite a bit. After they achieve the proper number of points I will slow the petter down to extend its battery life.

I am looking forward to Chapter 2 being released next month [October]. I think I will be able to keep myself busy with breeding until then.

Meeroos HUD Update version 1.2

A new version of the Meeroos HUD has been released by Team Meeroos. Changes are minimal but good. The HUD now displays the Hair trait. I do not have anything but normal Hairs so far, but it will come in handy when I do get some. It is a much requested feature and I am glad to see it on the HUD. There is also a percentage value when a Meeroo is in Too Soon. Immediately after a Meeroo breeds the value will be 0% then as it progresses through the next five (5) days it builds to 100%. Helpful when figuring out when Meeroos have bred and when purchased Meeroos will begin cycling again.
Version 1.2 HUDs at the main store
If you wear your current Meeroos HUD the new version should be offered to you very soon. You may want to detach and re-attach your HUD to jump-start the process. If you prefer; the new HUDs are also available at the main Meeroos store on the Roo SIM. Under the big red arrow. As you can see in the graphic above.

Do not worry if you noticed you have never had a version 1.1 HUD, no version 1.1 HUD was ever released to the public. This version 1.2 is the first update to the HUD following 1.0. You are not going crazy, everything is fine. For the most part.

Great new post on the WW of Meeroos site, very much worth a read. Looks like we are going to get some special messenger Meeroos. Which we will be able to buy for L$300 each with a random selection of traits and of the four (4) coats. Some coats will be rare others more common. More on those and other revelations later.

Meeroo Fun Facts: Food & Everything

Did you know that quite a few things happen when your Meeroos eat? They do not just stop being hungry and go in search of tin cans to dig up, quite a bit more is going on:

  • If a Meeroo has not reached its maximum size: it will grow each time it eats.
  • Meeroos change to their next Season as they eat.
  • They get older; Meeroo age increments during dinner.
  • They perform an eating animation.
  • There is even a chompy eating sound!

Each Meeroo eats four (4) times per day, so keep your eyes out for those animations and, if you happen to have your sounds up loud enough and your camera in the right place; you might also hear the chomp as they partake in a few berries. If they are not done growing you will see them puff up a tiny bit right as they finish eating, it is subtle but you will notice it if you watch carefully.

Meeroos in Ancient Egypt

If you take a look around the Roo Region, where the Meeroos store is located, you will eventually come upon a large pyramid with a few Meeroo looking statues out front. If you venture inside you will see a single adult Meeroo and what looks like a human holding a smaller Meeroo in his or her hands. All of this is quite a bit bigger than life. I do not know what to make of it yet. Could be for almost anything. I hope it has something to do with the Meerunic language. I am quite curious about that. [I think all my guesses were very wrong]. Here are some photos to give you an idea what the place looks like. I suggest you go check it out yourself, when you have time. There are signs up warning that it is under construction, so watch out for falling prims, statues, Avatars, etc...

That is it for pictures, I will keep checking back and will keep you informed if anything changes.

Where is my Meeroo Version 0.4 Beta

Just a super quick post to let everyone know I have released the newest version of the "Where is my Meeroo" Meeroo finder system. New version is 0.4 Beta and is available on the SL Marketplace HERE. [Always Free] Couple of fun new features: It now uses probes for scanning and you can rez as many as you like. So you can track all of your Meeroos, on a particular Region, with one Base unit. The Base unit does still look for Meeroos itself, so the probes are optional. You can rez multiple Base units if you wish without adverse effects.

For safety, if you will, I added a "Removed Meeroos" list. Every time the system looses a Meeroo it is added to the list. This happens when you take a Meeroo into Inventory, when you release a Meeroo or when a Meeroo is legitimately lost either by accidental deletion by the Meeroos server or by some LL bug. In the last case you may be unaware of the fact it has gone missing, checking the list will alert you. To cover the first two cases: You can manually clear the list to remove Meeroos you intended to Release. For when you need to take a Meeroo to change Home stumps; the system takes Meeroos off the Removed list when it finds them again. So a Meeroo that you have taken and re-rezzed will not show up on the list. Only Meeroos they system really can not find any more will. I hope this will help prevent missing Meeroos slipping through the cracks.

Other than that, just a few speed tweaks when communicating data to the Owner. Auto switches from using IM to OwnerSay, which for technical reasons, is faster. A few other under-the-hood modifications, hopefully making the WIMM a bit more stable and use a bit less script time. Enjoy!

Sixty Days to Breed

My Pre-Order Meeroos turned sixty (60) last night and stopped being able to breed. It was a bit sad as I had to release a few of them to make room for the new generation of breeders. One thing I noticed is it looks like Meeroos can breed through their sixtieth (60th) day. That is: they can continue to breed until they are over sixty (60). So once they hit 60.25 they will show as Elders and will not be able to breed. It might be important to know for your breeding strategy; my partner and I had a few pairs that bred a mere twenty (20) minutes before they became Elders. Having that Nest granted each of them three hundred (300) Regard points as well as the two hundred and fifty (250) points the Nest itself is worth. That is quite a bit of Regard from a pair we would have Released earlier had we thought they could not breed on their sixtieth (60th) day.

To put any rumours to rest: there is no Regard point bonus, either to the Meeroo or the Owner when the Meeroo hits Elder status. If that is the only reason you are holding on to some of yours, I am sorry to disappoint you.

I am excited to be starting on my second batch of Meeroos. I have added some in throughout my first batch, and still have some that are not yet close to Elder status. But for the most part all of my Meeroos currently are babies! It should be very interesting to see what I get from them. I am looking forward to figuring out more about their genetics this time around and I will keep you all updated here on the blog. With the first set, the Pre-Orders and the ones I got right after release, my strategy was to see how they bred and I used mostly random pairing in the beginning with a few stabs at breeding for a trait just recently. Now it is time to get a bit more scientific, now that I know a little more about the mystical creatures. The next sixty (60) days should be a very educational.

Honey part 2: Why Tiger Rocks

All of my MeePet worries are a thing of the past. Not only that, I am once again incredibly impressed with Team Meeroos. Some of you may have noticed Tiger's comment on my last post about the MeePets. He says: "They are still animals that want to eat, right? They will still starve if you don't let them eat their free honey. But, no matter how much/long you starve them, they won't run away." So a MeePet can eat Honey but does not have to! This mean they can be kept in Inventory and can easily be given to people as gifts. Even if the recipient knows nothing about breedables, or Meeroos, they can just pop their MeePet Meeroo out when they want, if they want, as an adorable pet. This is very good news for me as it means I can convert one of my favourites to have on my shoulder all the time! [Do not worry, I will let him down from time to time to nibble a bit of Honey.]

I said in my last post that I thought having an optional food for MeePets seemed like a lot of extra work and I am sure it was and is. Team Meeroos is doing it anyway and it is a brilliant touch. It adds realism to have food even for Meeroos that do not need to eat. It is so subtle that I was sure that was not how it was going to work. I did not think anybody would go to those lengths for an optional item. I should have known Malevay Studios would do things differently and not compromise any aspect of the Meeroos experience. So; thank you for the clarification Tiger and way to go. Team Meeroos rocks!

Meeroo Personality Profile: Shy

We all know Meeroos have little personalities that effect who they can breed with, what you may not know is that each personality type has its own special animation that fits its disposition. I am going to be photographing those mannerisms and posting them as a mini-feature on each Personality type. I am not looking forward to taking the Aggressive personality photo, they do no stay in position for long. Too feisty for that I assume.
Another animation you may have missed is the one for eating. All Meeroos have the same eating animation and they make a little noise when they are eating as well. Something to check out next time you see your little ones running for the food dish.

The first to get photographed, much against her wishes, is  B Meeroo. B is a Shy Meeroo and would have preferred to be left alone I think. After some petting and a few berries she did agree to a few quick photos, so here they are. Keep checking back, I'll be photographing the rest of the Personality types over the next few weeks and posting more profiles.

Meeroos @ SL8B

It is Second Life's 8th Birthday celebration this week. It is, well, interesting to check out. Very difficult to find anything I thought. I went looking for the Meeroos exhibit. When I found myself stymied I went to the best place to check: Meeroos Group chat. I had a landmark in a few minutes and I was on my way. I'll save you the trouble of asking in Group chat, you can TP there HERE.

The Meeroos plot is very calm and tasteful. The Oracle is there and is scheduled to say something tonight at 8pm SLT [Cancelled: Oracle has hair issues]. No idea what that might be, but I hope to be there. You can pet the Meeroos that are out while you look around, they love it. You can also help out my explaining to passers-by that Meeroos don't bite. Took some photos for the collection:

Introducing: The Emperor

From the Masked Meeroo species out of Japan comes yet another new coat, and an impressive one at that: the Emperor. It is a bit purpley and a lot brilliant. I can not wait to get one of these for myself. They are still incredibly rare so I am not holding out much hope, but you never know. With a bit of luck and the right genetics anybody could coax the next one, maybe even me. No, strike that, never am I that fortunate. I will do it the old fashioned way and wait till I see one on sale for a reasonable price and buy it.

I do not have much to go on to even guess the era this coat might be from, perhaps the Kofun period which starts about AD 250 an ended in AD 540 or so. Those dates are inexact, but you get the idea. Compare those dates to the Caledonian coat which I place at about AD 120. Four hundred (400) years in not a huge amount of time in genetic terms. I would say it is possible that these coats do in fact come from genetics that date back to about that time in history. With more breeding and more Regard I hope to see breeders push the genetics even further back. Who knows what we might see next? For now we will have to ohhhh and ahhh over this one:

The Caledonian

I recently got to take a look at another new Meeroo coat, the Gael Caledonian. It is a dark coat similar to the Ursine coat but with some subtle differences, as you can see from the photos. Interestingly "Caledonia" is the Latin name for Scotland. It was named that by the Romans during the time that they also owned all of England, then known as Britannia. This would have been about AD 120 or so. I imagine that the genes for this coat originate from about that period in history. Shows how far back we have managed to reach with breeding already. I can not even venture a guess at just how far back Meeroo DNA might go. I would actually poke myself in the eye to see a Meeroo from the Mesozoic era [250 - 60 million years ago]. That might take a bit of time, and Regard, to breed out though. I may have to wait awhile. But I digress, here are the photos for you:

New Food Released: Desert Grass and Junglevine

New food types have been released in the Meeroos store. These are for Meeroos from new species, none of which have been coaxed yet. Team Meeroos is ready for when they are and have made the food available to prevent any going hungry. No one knows how long it might be before one of these new species appears. I doubt it will be to long. Take a look at the Official Meeroos blog post about the new food, it explains everything very well.

The Meeroo from Japan

Some Koi coat Meeroos from Japan have been coaxed in the last few days. I did not think that they were going to be available until the October expansion, I was wrong; they are here now! Which is marvellous because they are super cute. I was able to get a few pictures of one that was just chilling, so here they are.

Open Beta Gift?

There has just been an InWorld Meeroos Group notice with the picture below attached. The text reads "the beta baby Clover". It looks like this could be, in some way, the gift for Open and Closed Beta testers. In Group chat Mehgan Southmoor [Meeroos CSR] wrote: "ok gang that is Clover, he will be meeting our beta testers soon!! Keep an eye on the official blog tonight!!!" and to clarify "closed and open beta testers yes." There is a lot of speculation right now, will it be the chance to breed one, or will they be gifted directly to testers? Nobody knows yet, but we have been told to keep our eyes on the Meeroos Blog this evening, so I for one will be doing just that! Excited!

The Meeroos blog has been updated with more info, check out the new post HERE.

Complex Breeding & Community: a Postscript

When I wrote THIS post on how Meeroos in-depth breeding system is good for the community I left out something very important. I just forgot. I do not know how, as it is most likely the biggest community builder of them all. When you buy nests from the Meeroos store, in any size, you are buying a random set of genders. You have no guarantee that you will have the same number of boys and girls. Even if you were, as I wrote in my previous post: you would still sometimes need to trade to get compatible pairs for breeding. Random genders takes it to another level.
My partner had a four (4) pack that was all female. I have heard quite a few people commenting on it in Group chat. I know there have been complaints. I understand that people have come to expect that a "pair pack" contains one (1) male and one (1) female. Meeroos are doing something different, I think better, and it is a bit of a shock at first. Think of it this way: even if they were male and female they still might not be able to breed. They could be incompatible. Making the genders random just adds one final layer of uncertainty to the breeding process; in my opinion making it more engaging.

I believe the complexity of the breeding process, and the amount of care you can put into Meeroos, dissuades many mega-breeders. Anybody who thought they could just invest a lot of money, rez a lot of Meeroos and collect a profit is most likely a bit disappointed at this point. Not that I have anything against loads of Meeroos. If that is what is fun for you, go for it. I have quite a few out myself; but not to many to pet daily. It took me quite a while to figure out how to pair them up and that after trading nests for both gender and compatibility. I do not fancy the work entailed in breeding Meeroos large scale. The sixty (60) day breeding span, matching gender, compatibility and aiming for rare trait combinations simultaneously is going to be time consuming with a SIM full of Meeroos. If you have that kind of time to invest, and are enjoying it, then more power to you. If your only interest is profit there are better places in Second Life to find it, I hope.

On the other hand, I feel that Meeroos encourages the smaller niche breeder. The more time you spend interacting with your Meeroos the better the results you can expect. Regard has a part to play in unlocking new genetics and traits and the more time you are with your Meeroos the more of it you ought to have. Even just picking up the treasures they find will build your Regard up fairly quickly. This means that even very small breeders, with only a few Meeroos, can still produce exceptional offspring. With the number of variations already possible with known Meeroo traits there is a lot of room for people interested in breeding specific combinations. While a breeder with a lot of cash to invest can buy a lot of nests and match them up for breeding they gain no particular advantage in doing so while the community is there to provide the same service to the micro-breeder. Never give up just because you are not the biggest breeder on the block, you might end up being the best.

I like that the community is close and people breeding Meeroos, on any scale, are doing it because they are having fun. Nest prices seem reasonable overall on the secondary market. Who knows how things may fluctuate over time, but for now I see most people setting sane prices. There will always be someone asking a million L$ for something or other, but as-a-whole things do not appear to be getting out of hand. The community is always the best place to come to trade nests, after your friends list of course. With random genders on top of everything else trading is critical. My partner and I have now found partners for every Meeroo we have through trades. We have not had to buy a single additional nest to make a pair. All those extra Meeroos we bought were just because we really really wanted them.

So if you are disappointed that your Meeroos do not all match up, if it is compatibility or genders that have you down. Look at it as a opportunity to get involved in the Meeeroos community. Have a look at the Trade Forum [You will need to sign in] and post what you have to trade. You might end up with a Meeroo you prefer to the one you had! Don't worry about being taken advantage of, but ask sensible questions. Nobody really knows what is super rare right now, or what is worth what. It is all speculation. Different people have different preferences. Go for what you like and try to keep informed about what is rare. Group chat is the best place for that, even if you just listen in. Of course you can always IM me if you like :)

Mating Compatibility Chart Textures!

I have ported the Meeroos Mating Compatibility Chart over to graphic form. Hopefully looks a bit better than the spreadsheet and should be easier to use. I have updated the original post with the new graphics and a download link if you would like a copy. I will also be uploading them to Second Life shortly and will post a SLURL to let you know where you can get them, for free, as soon as I do. You can find the original post and the new graphics: HERE. Enjoy!

Release the Fear

I am terrified of the RELEASE button on the Meeroos HUD. I know I am not the only one. My partner scarlett feels the same way, I'm not sure which of us is worse. I admit, I have had nightmares about that RELEASE button accidentally sending a wonderful little Meeroo off into the wild, possibly forever. I know in time I will get used to it,  will even have to use it. Right now though it serves no purpose; for what reason would I ask any of my most precious Second Life companions to leave? I would be heartbroken if I lost even one (1).
I know my fear is unfounded. It is very difficult to release a Meeroo by accident. Once you touch the button you then have to type "RELEASE" in open chat. It does have to be in all-capitals: "Release" and "release" will not work. I tested it during Open Beta. Where I think Meeroos are being released unintentionally is when people misunderstand the HUD and mistakenly believe that releasing Meeroos is a way to get them out of their nest. I can not imagine what it must be like, to be into these little guys as much as I am, and realize that you have lost a Meeroo as a result of your own misunderstanding. I might even cry. So the RELEASE button is a bit scary, it can do scary things, but it is not remotely likely to be triggered by mistake.

If you have had a nightmare, or two, about that infernal RELEASE button leave a comment and let me know about it. I know I am not the only crazy one out there, right... Hello? *chirp* Ha, knew my Meeroos would save me!

Launch!

As I am sure most of you know Launch is under-way. The original two (2) Regions have been full since 2pm SLT when it began. Team Meeroos have now opened up some additional locations with Meeroos vendors:

If you are having trouble getting to one of the primary stores, use one of these back-up locations. I hope everyone gets loads of Meeroos! Woot!

New Babies!

Loads of people having little Meeroo babies over the past few days, and of course continuing now! I have not yet had a nest yet myself; during the night I am sure. While I am sleeping they will be breeding. Hope to wake up to at least one if not two nests. scarlett however has had two nests already, one is pictured below. Now time to dream of Meeroos and hope for morning nests. Goodnight!
